Unless you know that your modem needs special in- itialization string, please use "ATZ" or "AT" for the modem initialization string. If your modem is not "AT" command set compatible then phone NADA 20 group for assistance. A typical modem dialing string starts with four charac- ters "ATDT" followed by an optional space and then the com- plete phone number for the NADA 20 group modem. If your phone system requires '9' or some other character to get an outside line then you may have to start your modem string with "ATDT 9". If you have to wait for the dial tone after pressing '9' then start your modem string with "ATDT 9W". If your modem is not "AT" command set compatible then phone NADA 20 group for assistance. Enter the speed of your modem in baud. The program checks for valid speeds but will not allow speeds faster than 28800 baud or slower than 1200 baud. If your modem is capable of running faster than 28800, we suggest you enter a speed of 14400. This speed provides good performance and reliable communication. If your modem is slower than 1200 baud, then please purchase a new modem. April 9, 1996 page 19 (s7B9.(s0B (s7BFILE(s0B (s7BREBUILD(s0B (s7BPURPOSE(s0B The files used in this system are very complex. It is very im- portant that the computer always be shut down properly by first exiting from NADA 20 GROUP reporting system. Improper exit can occur several ways: 1) You just forget and hit the switch. 2) The power goes out (usually during a storm). 3) The electrician or somebody is flipping circuit breakers.
